General Choi would have been very proud of us today

(November 5th, 2006)

These words were pronounced by Master Trân Triêu Quân in his conclusion to the First International Workshop on Teaching the Do in Benidorm on October 25, 2006. It was the General’s earnest desire that the next generations of Instructors incorporate the teaching of the “Do” into the teaching of Taekwon-Do. When Master Trân Triêu Quân succeeded General Choi as President of the ITF in 2003, he announced that the development of the teaching of the Do would be one of his goals during his term of office.

Nearly 40 participants from 17 countries attended the 6-hour workshop offered on October 25 and 26, 2006. Among them, there were many country leaders, including several masters and instructors with long teaching experience in Taekwon-Do. It is worth noting that Master Pablo Trajtenberg, Senior Vice-President, and Master Hector Marano, Chair of the Technical and Instruction Committee, were also present at the workshop.

The main objectives of the workshop were to reach a better understanding of the tenets of Taekwon-Do and how they can be developed or enriched, to learn when and how to use various tools and specific techniques to teach effectively the tenets of Taekwon-Do, and to integrate the teaching of the tenets of Taekwon-Do into the regular Taekwon-Do lessons.

If one considers the comments made by the participants, it would appear that the workshop was a great success. Here is a sample of what they said about it:

  • “A big day for ITF Taekwon-Do!”
  • “Very inspiring. I learned a lot about myself and how I can teach the Do to my students.”
  • “The workshop was excellent. I am very happy that I took this workshop. I will work on using it in my class.”

Participants appreciated the workshop in many ways:

  • “I liked the professionalism and knowledge of the presenters.”
  • “I liked the different methods of teaching used during the workshop.”
  • “I appreciated that we got to work as a group, to have time to discuss with the speakers and the other participants.”
  • “I learned that there are many tools and situations that we can use to teach the tenets of Taekwon-Do.”
  • “I appreciated having examples of how to teach the tenets of Taekwon-Do in my school.”

Some countries have indicated that they would take steps to include the teaching of the Do in their national course for Instructors. Others have expressed an interest in advanced training in the teaching of the Do for their Instructors. As to the ITF, it is looking at ways to integrate the teaching of the Do into the International Instructors Course. This augurs well for the teaching of the Do in ITF Taekwon-Do.
